چکیده

In this paper different error protection strategies in different protocol layers are discussed, in order to reliably broadcast multimedia data within existing wireless networks. In particular, we investigate the performance of additional Forward Error Correction (FEC) in the physical layer, the Radio Link Control (RLC) layer, and the Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP) layer for Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS) over GERAN systems. Advantages and drawbacks when applying error correction in different layers are shown. We introduce a simple receiver modification, referred to as permeable-layer receiver (PLR), which exploits traditionally useless information at the receiver, while the transmitter is kept unchanged. Significant performance gains are reported. Finally, the application to H.264/AVC based wireless video broadcast is discussed and the performance of different system designs for video transmission is shown.

A Theoretical Framework for Quality-Aware Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications

Although cross-layer has been thought as one of the most effective and efficient ways for multimedia communications over wireless networks and a plethora of research has been done in this area, there is still lacking of a rigorous mathematical model to gain in-depth understanding of cross-layer design tradeoffs, spanning from application layer to physical layer. As a result, many existing cross...

Cross-Layer Co-Exploration of Exploiting E Over Wireless Applicati

In this paper, we propose a cross-layer algorithm/architecture co-exploration for wireless multimedia systems to coordinate interactions among sub-layer optimizers for improvements in energy/QoS/reliability. By exploiting the inherent redundancy in wireless multimedia systems, we generate an expanded design space over traditional, layer-specific approaches. Specifically, we control the error re...

Enhancement of Qos For 4G Wireless Networks Using Cross Layer Design

Quality of service (QoS) is considered as the backbone of any heterogeneous wireless networks. The goal is to come up with the work presents a improved QoS framework for multimedia streaming across 4G heterogeneous wireless networks that can be achieved by applying cross layer technique in the network design. We focus on three main places where the cross layer design that helps to improve the Q...
